The title of this post links to an article about a 90 minute video, a lecture, by Robert Lustig, MD, a UCSF Professor of pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology.
This video, after watching it yesterday, has changed my entire perception on fructose. It talks about sugar, glucose, sucralose, ethanol, and carbohydrates too, and breaks down his argument using bio-chemical, political, and sociological arguments.
Memorable quotes from The Video:
“The reason why this is a problem is because fructose is a poison. It has nothing to do with the calories. It’s a poison by itself.”
“Fructose does not suppress ghrelin (the hunger hormone).” If you pre-load a kid with a can of soda, they eat more afterwards.
Acute fructose does not stimulate insuline or leptin - so the insulin doesn’t go up, the leptin doesn’t go up, and your brain doesn’t see that you ate something, so you eat more.
“Chronic fructose consumption alone causes metabolic syndrome.”
“Wherever there is sugar in nature, there is fibre. Eat carbohydrates with fibre.”
“Fructose is ethanol without the buzz.”
Life Recommendations:
-Get rid of every sugared liquid in the house - only water and milk
-Eat your carbohydrate with fibre
-Wait 20 minutes for second portions
-Buy your “screen” (tv, computer, etc) time minute-for-minute with physical activity
Why is physical exercise important?
-NOT because it burns calories
-Because it imporves skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity
-Because it reduces stress, and resultant cortisol release
-Because it makes the TCA cycle run faster, and detoxifies fructose, improving hepatic insulin sensitivity
The video explains everything. Every minute of it was interesting to me, I even back-tracked to make sure I understood some of the points he made. He speaks earnestly, but I think he has a right to.
